The Curtain Call
After two weeks of intensive dress, tech and production rehearsals another hectic two weeks of shows followed. Every night at six o'clock, we began the ritual: makeup, costume, soundcheck, warm-up, meditation into five-minute-call. Every night at ten o'clock, we rewound the process: microphone wires untangled, costumes off and washed, makeup removed, stumbling into bed at 11:15.
And now? Radio silence.
Jesus Christ Superstar has officially come to an end. I've allowed myself some time to mourn and to celebrate my memories of the cast, crew, production team and the show itself. It's been one week since closing night, and I'm feeling many emotions.
Pride, elation, happiness and... disappointment?
A strange air of flatness is surrounding me, and at first, I didn't know how to cope with it. I feel emotionally exhausted but also wound-up, and sensitive. I feel useless, as though I have nothing possibly worthwhile to do anymore.
This may sound strange or unnatural to anyone who hasn't performed in a show before, but for us seasoned theatre kids, it's all too familiar. The post-show blues; an unfriendly but well-known companion that always steps in as soon as you wake up in the morning after curtain call.
My advice for this: although it's only natural to feel flat after a show, to feel a little bit down and to miss the glitz and glam of the theatre, take this time to appreciate all the memories you made and experiences you had.
After all, there's always another show around the corner...
