Monday, Wednesday, Sunday Motivation

For those of you who've been involved with any production before, you'd understand that sometimes it can be supremely difficult to get motivated for a day of rehearsals. Maybe you've had a tough week at work, maybe you're overwhelmed by your studies or your personal life has taken a beating. Maybe none of these things have happened and you're just not feeling it.

Believe me: this is natural, this is expected and this will absolutely happen to you at least once throughout the rehearsal and production process.

For me, I find it difficult to get motivated for our late night rehearsals; we rehearse until 10:30 pm every Monday and Wednesday and as I work a 9-5:30 job, often the last thing I want to do is get changed into my active wear and trek out to rehearsals.

It's winter, I'm cold, hungry and tired.

With this attitude, my motivation levels have been so low that I've find myself irritable or grumpy, making little to no effort to learn the material and then, when I'm feeling better the next day, I resent myself.

Here are some tips and tricks to get yourself rehearsal ready, no matter what your life is throwing at you.

1. Always give yourself some time during the day to focus on how you're feeling. If you're hungry, have a light snack. If you're tired, have a cup of tea and relax. If you're emotionally drained, listen to your favourite music and drown out the world for a minute or two. The little things count.
2. Try to remind yourself WHY you're doing this production, and remind yourself WHAT you love about this particular project. We have control over our emotions and attitude, and sometimes all we need is a reminder.
3. Treat yourself and others with kindness. If you're not quite acing a particular piece of chorey, or one of your harmonies just doesn't seem to stick, seek out a friend to help you out. I can guarantee that you're not the only one who's felt this way.
4. Most of all... have fun! Don't take anything too seriously! You're surrounded by like-minded people who love what they do just as much as you do. Have a ball, do your best and make as many positive memories as you can. Shows don't last forever!
