The Audition
Do you ever find that before your audition, every noise around you seems to be amplified?
The ticking of the clock, the slamming of the car door, the rehearsal pianist playing chords in the next room, your heart beating in your ears?
My audition for Jesus Christ Superstar was at 3:00 pm today, and with every minute that ticked by on the clock, my nerves grew tenfold.
Today, I sang 'She Used to Be Mine' from the Broadway musical 'Waitress' and 'Turn Back O' Man' from Sondheim's classic 'Godspell'. In my audition form, I wrote that I'd be happy just being cast in ensemble if I wasn't considered for a lead role. I didn't write that this audition was my one attempt at taking back control of a part of myself that I feel like I've lost.
I know I didn't do as well as I could have, given that the nerves were eating away at me and I didn't have the power and confidence that I know I can show. But, I did my best and it's always important to remember that your best is all anyone can ask for. I had to remind myself that even turning up to the audition was a step that I wouldn't have dreamed of taking six or twelve months ago.
The production team will get in touch with me in a few days, so now it's just the waiting game.
If I'm not successful, I will know that at least I tried.
Wish me luck!
