Rehearsals: The First Week

I have officially completed one week of rehearsals.

Monday night, Wednesday night and Sunday afternoon.

Not a crazy, grueling schedule but for someone who has been missing in action for nearly three years, it has definitely been a challenge.

We've learnt half of the music from Act 1 and three songs have been choreographed. My legs are aching and I can definitely feel my muscles responding after such a long period of hibernation; I'm still not sure whether they're screaming out of pain or elation. Stay tuned.

For those of you who are thinking of auditioning for their first musical, or even those who have had an extended vacation from performing like I have, I've included some tips and tricks to get you back into the musical theatre mindset or, MTM. I know it's hard to find the motivation to trek out to rehearsal after a long day of work or study, and here are some techniques that I employ to feel more prepared and less reluctant.

Step 1: Prepare a bottle of water and a piece of fruit to take with you; junk food and sugary drinks may give you a quick burst of energy, but they wear off much faster and often leave you feeling sluggish and physically exhausted.
Step 2: Dress for comfort, not for fashion. Your new Converse may look amazing paired with some vintage jeans and a knit, but you'll soon find the balls of your feet aching and your legs seizing up. Choose instead to wear some supportive sneakers, comfortable and breathable pants (whether that be shorts, tights or trackies) and always wear a couple of layers, so you can lose some as your body gets warmer.
Step 3: Always think positively and make goals for each rehearsal. Avoid self-deprecating and focus instead on your strengths and abilities. You ARE talented and you need to give yourself some credit. A little bit of faith and self-encouragement go a long way.

See you all next week!
